We consider migratory movements and their consequences to be part of our everyday lives and social structures. The program aims to provide its graduates a deeper understanding of ongoing processes of international migration and mobilities, and the consequences they have, mutually influencing each other, (re)producing inequalities and generating new dynamics.
Our new Master’s programme ‘Sociology: Society, Space & Transformation’ combines sociology with a human-geographical perspective. Students examine social processes and their spatial relations – from local to global. Climate change, migration, digitalisation and production networks connect social spaces, drive social change, and transform working and living conditions. How people experience this and how social inequalities develop depends on resources, social positions and place – evident, for example, in family life, education, housing, work and leisure. In shared core modules, students develop an integrated theoretical understanding of space, power, difference and transformation, acquire skills in quantitative and qualitative social research, and adopt a critical and reflective perspective.
In our interdisciplinary student extension programme “Migration Studies” we offer a variety of courses including international labour migration, the mobility of (highly) skilled and less-skilled workers, on global migration dynamics and migration history, refugee dynamics and forced migration, the intersections of migration and populism, racism and nationalism, on gender sexualities and diversity as well as on religion, culture, literature, education, communication, and mobilities. Students can select from a broad range of courses and must fulfil 24 ECTS credits to get a certificate.
